Dear Families,
Hopefully, you all had
an amazing Thanksgiving break that was full of delicious food and beloved family! I want to take this time to let you know that I am thankful for each of you and your children,
as well as the wonderful time of rest, fun, and reflection that I recently enjoyed. I am
also grateful for the most beautiful weather one could ask for during our break!
WRITING
Poetry is our new topic
of study in language arts. During this study, students will discuss the
structure of several new poem styles, read poems by published authors, and
write their own poetry. For our focus this week, we will learn about acrostics,
concrete poems, diamantes, and cinquains.
Vocabulary will continue,
but all words will be defined in class. These words will be poetry words that
we will be using during this unit.
READING
We will be reading and
analyzing works from Shell Silverstein and several other poets to guide our
learning of poetry. During this unit, we will learn about what poetry is, how
to respond to poetry, the difference between free verse and lyrical poetry, personification,
and onomatopoeias and hyperboles.
MATH
We just finished our unit
on multiplication, and students did really well. Please continue to practice
multiplication facts at home. This skill is imperative for future
success.
We will now begin a short unit on Place
Value. In this unit, we will stretch our learning to the place value of 9,999. Students will be asked to compare numbers,
write numbers in various forms, locate numbers on a number line, and represent
the number in multiple ways.
Students will take a District Curriculum Based Assessment on
Wednesday.
SCIENCE
We will begin our unit on Earth’s
surfaces by constructing and comparing landforms. We will then begin to look at
changes to the Earth, both slow and rapid changes.
