Language Arts:
This week in writing workshop, as we begin another small moment writing, we will refocus our attention on the revision part of the writing process in our stories.
Your child will continue to share published papers throughout the week in our Author’s Chair and completed stories will go home in the Tuesday folder. Please remember that each child will complete the process at different levels and speed so there may be some weeks you won’t see a completed piece of writing in your child’s Tuesday folder and other weeks you may see more than one.

MATH:
We are continuing our unit on subtraction strategies. This unit introduces the “THINK ADDITION” strategy for the Count On Subtraction facts. Each Count On Subtraction fact and its Turnaround subtraction fact form a fact family with their addition partner fact. This unit also reinforces the Addition Count On strategy and the Addition Use Doubles strategies that the children have already learned. For example: Addition has turnaround facts such as 2+6=8 and 6+2=8, subtraction has partner facts such as 8-6=2 and 8-2=6. Addition facts and subtraction facts that involve the same parts in total form fact families. This unit will continue for several more weeks as we dive into more complex thinking strategies and problem solving associated with subtraction strategies.
SCIENCE:
Our study of different types of animals was engaging and full of whole group discussions. We learned about reptiles, fish, and mammals. Each different type of animal has "special body parts" and adaptations that help them survive.
Silkworms:We began last week with two cocoons and now have 3 cocoons, 1 moth, and 1 silkworm. Our wish came true as we were able to observe a silkworm actually spinning its cocoon during the school day. We were able to watch him twirling its little head around and around as it spun its new home made of a very long thread of silk. Wow! The little guys were busy this week!
Our trip to Zachary Scott Theatre was a big hit. Along with learning more about the water cycle and the importance of conserving it, we also reviewed the order of the planets in our solar system. The plot involved aliens who were visiting our planet in search of water for their space ship. The aliens wanted us to learn from their mistake of wasting water by spreading the message that conserving water is important for the future of our planet and for mankind.
IMPORTANT DATES AND REMINDERS:
Tuesday is Library day. Please return the library books so your child can check out new ones.
