Ms. Christofferson's Corner
Week of April 16th – 20th
SPELLING: It is so clear to me that MANY of you have been working with your child at home on their weekly spelling words since I have added them to the weekly blog! Please keep up the hard work, as it is helping your child greatly!! Spelling tests will still be taken at the end of every week. Please ask your child what color group he/she is on this week so you can work on the spelling words at home.
**NOTE** There are two areas of concern that I would like to take the time to address:
1) A few children have been telling me that their parents have been saying that the words on their lists are too easy for them.
2)You may see some words repeated.
The words that have been assigned to each group are not by mistake. Each child has been specifically placed in a particular group based upon the needs that are shown in that child's daily writing and assessments.
The words on your child's spelling lists are words that I have noticed frequently misspelled in your child's writing assignments, and words that the majority of the group also misspelled on the spelling assessment.

When a child begins to apply the information from an assessment in the daily work, that is when the true learning has occurred. I hope this helps put worries to rest.

Language Arts:
This week in writing workshop, we will continue working our way through the writing process with personal narrative writing. We will each have the opportunity to sit in the author's chair and read our own "small moment" personal narrative as we complete the publishing stage. For reading workshop we will continue to build on some of the reading strategies already taught such as: talk to a partner that has already read the book, make a sketch (for mental pictures), using clues from the book (relationships and characters), and retelling the story that we have just read.
Hatching Chicks and Silkworms:
It was very exciting to watch the chicks hatch from their eggs this week! We had 26 baby chicks hatch in all the first grade classes. When Mrs. Caballero was leaving on Friday evening, she heard a peep and realized that one more chick was hatching! Most of the baby chicks were picked up today and brought to Mrs. Hadden's family ranch. They will send us pictures periodically and we will continue to monitor their growth until the end of school.
Now, moving on to silkworms ... These little caterpillars have been eating and growing like crazy! In fact, one of the silkworms in our classroom has even spun a silk cocoon already! We're anxious to see and learn more about these fascinating, little creatures as the weeks unfold.
MATH:
We are starting a new unit on subtraction and fact families. This unit introduces the “THINK ADDITION” strategy for the Count On Subtraction facts. The facts covered in this strategy are related to their partner facts covered in the Count On Addition strategy. For example: Addition has turnaround facts such as 2+6=8 and 6+2=8, subtraction has partner facts such as 8-6=2 and 8-2=6. Addition facts and subtraction facts that involve the same parts in total form fact families.
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week in science we will be studying living and non-living things. Important questions: Does it have basic needs? Does it have offspring? How do animals depend on other living things to survive? How are animal body parts related to where it lives? How it eats and how it moves?
IMPORTANT DATES AND REMINDERS:
