Language Arts:
In Language Arts, we will continue our genre focus on Folktales/Fables. The children have loved trying to figure out the moral or lesson in the stories and identifying the elements. In Reader’s Workshop, during read-to-self and read-with-partner, we will be working on the following comprehension strategies to refine our understanding when we read: a good reader's voice sounds smooth; he can picture the story; he can retell the story easily. In Writer’s Workshop we will start our unit on Small Moments: Personal Narrative Writing. Our focus will return back to what a small moment story is and the importance of stretching that small moment across several pages to develop meaning. We will listen to how published authors have stretched a moment across several pages. Finally, we will be writing our own small moment stories.
Math:
We will begin our unit on money. This unit will last for two weeks. This week we will focus on identifying the penny, nickel, and dime by name and value and describe relationships among them. We will make a K-W-L chart in our math journals for each coin. We will also make a book for each coin, listing the different attributes about the coins. The following week, we will learn about the quarter. Then, we will learn how to make a nickel with pennies, a dime with pennies and nickels, a quarter with … you get the idea. J The coin books will go home at the end of the two week unit.
Social Studies:
We will focus this week on how technology has shaped our community. We will talk about how things were done long ago vs. today with our mail, travel, printing, telephones, computers, etc.
