Blog update for the week of October 27th – 31st
Writer’s Workshop:
As this unit on Expository/Informational
writing continues, we have already completed organizing our facts into three different
subtopics on our graphic organizer, and have written our first drafts. This
week, we will continue to revise and edit our factual writing, and then
continue writing our final drafts. This style of writing is very different
from our personal narratives because we are not telling a story about
ourselves; rather we are sharing information about something else. So far, our main
focus has been in keeping our opinions separated from the facts while sharing
information, and not telling “how to” do something. The children have been
working hard on these concepts and are embracing the new challenge! We will
have some great papers coming soon!
Our vocabulary words are: ability, loyal,
lying, partners, patrol, quiver, shift, and snap. Your child is
responsible for knowing how to spell the words, along with knowing how to use
the words correctly in complete sentences.
Reading Workshop:
We will continue learning more about
reading nonfiction texts. For this week's focus, we will discuss how good
readers ask questions before, during, and after reading as well as discussing
author’s purpose. Students will be assessed on their understanding of
author’s purpose at the end of the week.
Again this week, students will be assigned an
additional comprehension activity that needs to be completed at home and
will be due on Friday. In addition to answering each
question, students are expected to find the page number in which the answer can
be found in the text. This week’s questions will be sent home, as they are not
in the weekly yellow comprehension packet. Students will also be expected to
read the story independently, as we will not be reading the story together in
class.
MATH
We have almost completed our time unit
and will be taking the assessment in the next couple of days! Elapsed
time is a hard skill, so we will continue practicing this. This week we will
start our unit on money. Students will begin practicing how to
determine the value of a collection of bills and coins. In addition,
students will also be learning how to add and subtract money and determine the
correct amount of change. Please practice these skills at
home. Students will be assessed on their understanding of money at the end
of the week.
SCIENCE
We are finishing our unit on matter
and will focus on how states of matter can change with heat and cold. An
assessment will be given at the end of the week.
