Week of September 8-12

WRITING
This week, students will begin learning about Personal Narratives. Through a series of mini-lessons and picture books, students will learn more about the background, organization, and idea formation of personal narrative pieces. By the end of the week, students will have started at least 1 personal narrative writing sample.

Again this week, students will be assigned vocabulary homework that needs to be completed at home and turned in by Friday. All 8 words must be defined and used correctly in a sentence (with at least 7 words). On Friday, students will be assessed for their ability to spell 5 of the words correctly, choose their matching definition, and use 2 of the words in a complete sentence.

READING
In class, students will be reading The Trial of Cardigan Jones and answering comprehension questions related to this story. They will also be assigned a smaller text that correlates to the style, theme, and content of The Trial of Cardigan Jones to complete a second comprehension activity. Students will learn that much of the 3rd grade reading curriculum centers around understanding a text and responding in various ways and answering in complete sentences.

Again this week, students will be assigned an additional comprehension activity that needs to be complete at home and will be due on Thursday. In addition to answering each question, students are expected to find the page number in which the answer can be found in the text.

MATH
Our focus this week will continue with multiplication. We will learn more about the 10s and 5s facts and will deepen our understanding of the multiplication processes and strategies.

SCIENCE
Our study of science will now cover various forms of energy. This week, we will look at what energy is, types of energy, and ways to identify the form of energy being used.

DISMISSAL
Dismissal expectations have changed this year, but we think the process will run continue to run smoother over time. If there is a change in your child's daily transportation plan, please email me or write it in their planner.

PLANNER
Please continue to initial your child's planner each night. This is also a place where you can let me know any additional information, as I see these planners each day. There is an additional line for reading and math minutes. Each child is expected to read at least 120 minutes each week. There is no set limit on math minutes, although I would like to see some math practice throughout the week. Please record the minutes in this format: R30/M10. This would translate to 30 minutes of reading and 10 minutes of math.

PARENT NIGHT
Details (such as the planner) will be discussed at Parent Night on September 8th at 7pm. Please make plans to attend, as I would love the opportunity to share classroom information with you.

CONFERENCES
Please mark your calendar for September 24 (Early Release) and the days surrounding it, as these will be the days of Fall Conferences. A sign up calendar will be sent out this week, and I would like to meet with each family.
