Dear Families,

This has been another great week with lots of note worthy work being done in our classroom! The children have really been wrapping their brains around interesting "feeling" words during reading and writing time. We have also been putting on our thinking caps during math time while reviewing and extending our knowledge of rounding up and down in order to estimate numbers and with using the expanded form of a number. The children seem to have pretty well mastered the four forms of energy studied during science time this week as well. As we are about to wrap up this fabulous week and begin another learning filled, engaging week here in 3rd grade, I would like to thank all of you for your support at home and in the classroom!

WRITING
Students will continue learning about Personal Narratives throughout this week. They will be learning to use sensory words to paint a picture in the reader’s mind.  During our mini-lessons, we will read personal narrative stories and note important places where authors have used these strategies. Students will apply their new knowledge of word painting to their own personal narratives pieces.

Again this week, students will be assigned vocabulary homework that needs to be completed at home and turned in by Friday. All 8 words must be defined and used correctly in a sentence (with at least 7 words). On Friday, students will be assessed for their ability to spell 5 of the words correctly, choose their matching definition, and use 2 of the words in a complete sentence.

READING
Students will be reading Pop’s Bridge and answering comprehension questions related to this story. They will also be assigned a smaller text that correlates to the style, theme, and content of Pop’s Bridge to complete a second comprehension activity. We will be comparing and contrasting similar stories with each other. Students will learn that much of the 3rd grade reading curriculum centers around understanding a text and responding in various ways and answering in complete sentences.

Again this week, students will be assigned an additional comprehension activity that needs to be complete at home and will be due on Thursday. In addition to answering each question, students are expected to find the page number in which the answer can be found in the text.

MATH
We have moved to a new unit in Math this week. We will be turning our skills to learning new addition and subtraction strategies to help us have a better understanding of place value and to become more efficient mathematicians. We will learn strategies such as make –ten, make-hundred, splitting into place value, and more.

Social Studies
Now that we have completed our Forms of Energy unit in Science, we will switch our focus to Social Studies. We will be learning about what it means to be a good citizen with topics such as, what is good citizenship and why good citizenship is important.

DISMISSAL
If there is a change in your child's daily transportation plan, please email me or write it in their planner.
