LANGUAGE ARTS:
This week in writing workshop, we will continue our attention on the revision part of the writing process in our stories. Our focus will be on adding dialogue, revising by taking away some words and adding others. Your child will continue to share published papers throughout the week in our Author’s Chair and completed stories will go home in the Tuesday folder. Please remember that each child will complete the process at different levels and speed so there may be some weeks you won’t see a completed piece of writing in your child’s Tuesday folder and other weeks you may see more than one. In reading workshop, we will continue working on the skill of summarizing. Your child will be writing summaries as well as working on verbalizing summaries to their peers as a small group and large group setting.
MATH:
It is time for our estimation and probability unit, which is always a big hit with the children. We will be practicing our skills with estimation and probability through games each day. Students will begin by estimating and graphing, and reviewing <, >, = signs while recording their estimations and comparing these to their actual findings while they play games. They will be coming to a deeper understanding of probability by guessing what the odds are that a certain outcome will occur, then recording and graphing the actual results. We will be doing a lot of comparing, contrasting, and analyzing data during this part of the unit.
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
As well as continuing journaling about the seeds that we planted last week, we will begin learning about timelines. The students will gain a broader understanding of these as we discover answers to many questions about timelines, such as, “What is a timeline? Why are timelines important and how can they be used? Where do we see timelines every day? What do we notice about timelines?” We will make a class timeline of our year in first grade!

Thank you to the wonderful families at Caraway Elementary!!
I would just like to say, “THANK YOU!!!” to all of my students and parents for making me feel so special and loved this week. The wonderful, creative, and even funny cards, notes, and gifts reflect each and every personality in my classroom. To all of the parents, and a few in particular (you know who you are) ... I don't even know how to describe what it feels like to have such support and understanding as I have experienced over this past week. You are all wonderful, amazing, generous, and caring families who have touched my heart in a special way. It is no mistake that your children are so caring toward others! They are watching, listening, and learning from you. I am honored to be teaching your children!
Jennie Phillips, Jodi Shores, Cheryl Borden, and Judy Lopato for being the glue that held things together this week.
To all my parents for supporting your child's education.
