We will be having a new friend into our class beginning this Monday. His name is Cameron Ellis. Welcome Cameron!! SPELLING: Every Friday your child will take a spelling test. Please ask your child what color group he/she is on this week so you can work on the spelling words at home.

READING: This week we will discuss different types of expository texts about culture, different countries and people. Some of these books are literary nonfiction, so it is sometimes hard for students to tell if it is fiction or non-fiction. We will discuss the author's purpose in this genre: teaching the readers about culture and people.
WRITING: The children worked very hard to complete their research papers. They are all hanging up in the hallway. I’m so proud of them for really doing the research and working hard. I hope you get the chance to see them in the hallway. If not, they will go home in the Tuesday folder in a couple of weeks. This week, we will review expository or procedural writing. We will write facts about non-fiction books that we read (informal expository) or write instruction for how to complete a task.
MATH: In math we will begin our unit on fractions. The children will learn how to identify equal and unequal parts, describe equal parts of whole objects, make parts of a set and learn how to describe them. Fractional parts are equal shares of a whole or parts of a set. This will be our first week of a two week unit.
SCIENCE: This week we will learn about different types of weather and climate. We will investigate wind and make wind socks to determine the direction the wind is blowing. We will discuss the three main types of precipitation: rain, sleet and snow. Finally we will discuss extreme weather such as flooding, tornados, and hurricanes. We will end the unit with a fun creative lesson around the book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
DATES AND REMINDERS: Tuesday: folders come home. Please sign and return.
Thursday: Library day. Please return the library books.
