April 2nd - 5th

Dear families,

You will notice some changes in the spelling lists over the next several weeks. We are temporarily taking a break from Words -Their-Way in all groups except for the Red Group. We have also added an orange group. The spelling tests over the next several weeks will be based upon the results of your child's Word Wall Words assessment that was taken this week. Please ask your child which group he or she is in weekly. If you have any questions as to which group your child is in, please feel free to call or email. It is so clear to me that MANY of you have been working with your child at home on their weekly spelling words since I have added them to the weekly blog!  Please keep up the hard work, as it is helping your child greatly!!

SPELLING:Spelling tests will still be taken at the end of every week. Please ask your child what color group he/she is on this week so you can work on the spelling words at home.

Green Group: because, from, gave, how, little, many, may, said, saw

Blue Group: been, by, down, for, little, look, many, the, there

Orange Group: little, many, they, there, their, these, were, with, would, your

Red Group: Review of Long Vowel Patterns: sold, bleed, wave, glow, hold, steep, tone, clue, grind, sneak, slide

Language Arts:
We will continue investigating media literacy this week. Our focus will be on digital and print media. We will explore the techniques used to grab the readers’ attention and influence them. We will examine how pictures, graphics, words, fonts, sounds, and movement are used in media literacy, and understand the purpose for each.

HATCHING CHICKS:
This week we will continue to read literature about chickens and hatching baby chicks. The development of the chicks are far enough along now that we are able to “candle” (put a strong light source behind the egg) and see the development inside the egg. This is always exciting to see in real life what is happening inside the egg. We are expecting our chicks to hatch around April 11th!

MATH:
We will comparing weight/mass and capacity of objects as well as use mathematical language to help answer questions and solve problems. There will be two days of activities planned in the science lab for us to compare and order two or more objects according to capacity (greatest to least) and weight (heaviest to lightest).

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
For the first two days, the children will be presenting their research projects completed from home. Next, we will begin our unit in Social Studies on economics focusing on goods and services in the home, school, and community and reviewing wants and needs.
